Area code 606 serves eastern Kentucky, including cities such as Ashland, Pikeville, Morehead, and Somerset. It was created in 1954 as a split from area code 502 and initially covered all of eastern and central Kentucky. In 1999, it was reduced in size with the creation of area code 859. The 606 region is characterized by Appalachian culture, coal mining heritage, and natural beauty, including parts of Daniel Boone National Forest. The area code is a strong symbol of eastern Kentucky’s resilience and community identity. 606 continues to serve a mostly rural population with limited need for an overlay.
