Area code 907 serves the entire state of Alaska, covering all major cities like Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks across a vast geographic area. Assigned in 1957 (shortly before Alaska’s statehood), 907 went into service after a submarine cable opened communications between Alaska and the mainland U.S.. It remains Alaska’s sole telephone area code, one of only a dozen U.S. states or territories with a single code for the whole region. The 907 area is geographically the largest of any U.S. area code – in fact, because Alaska’s Aleutian Islands cross the 180° meridian, 907 can be considered both the westernmost and easternmost area code in North America. Despite Alaska’s expansive size, the population is relatively small, so 907 is not projected to exhaust its numbers until at least 2049.
